Greetings Midnight Wurmians,

This is your weekly maintenance and updates report [server patch notes] for the week of Monday, January 15th, 2018.

NEW FEATURES, MODS, FUNCTIONALITY, ETC.:

New Mods & Updates:

Nothing new this week.

Tweaks and Adjustments:

Cochineals: The final step to the dye overhaul was released today. Huge spiders now have a chance to drop Cochineals. The drop rate may need to be modified so please don't hesitate to give me your feedback. This will remain in place until the next Phase of the dye overhaul is ready (when Cactii is released).

IN THE PIPELINE:
Currently we have a number of projects in the pipeline but here's some details on what is close to breaking the surface and becoming a reality very soon.

White Light Altar: So a lot of critters have moved into the white light altar area of late. Anyone who has been up there this last week will notice there are "Peacekeeper" NPC guards present sporting yellow tabards. These aren't normal freedom tower guards, and are there to help protect visitors. Since building is not permitted within 100 tiles of either of the great altars I'm considering a move. Many of you have seen the northern most central island on the map has had GM Reserved markers on it since the server launched. This was always the planned site to potentially move the white altar to. Because of how the great altars work its not a simple matter to just GM spawn a new one somewhere else. Thus the reason its never been moved yet. However, I think the time has come to make the change. I have some trials to do in a test environment and need to construct out landscaping and decorations of the island first as even a GM can't build in a the proximity of a great altar, except for some basics like the stone benches I installed a while back. So the island needs to be totally finished before the move. 12/26 - With the dye project out of the pipeline new I'll be revisiting this now to finish this up.

Current Coding Project: I'm mostly doing some research experiments on several code areas to figure out how a few areas work I've not dabbled in yet. Beyond that I plan to spend some time the next few weeks working on some model experimentation/manipulation as my next big planned project will be another wave of new content.

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING ITEMS, RAMBLINGS, ETC.:

MONTHLY RAFFLE: As you should all know as a thank-you for voting for our server https://wurm-unlimited.com/server/2668/ each month I give out a prize to 2 lucky voters. There are 2 categories a 15 votes and up (receives a sleep powder), and a everyone category (receives set of 80ql horseshoes). Once the 15+ winner is selected the are then excluded from the everyone category for that month. The winner is announced here after the first maintenance of the new month. Claim your daily reward at the: Midnight Wurm Control Panel

December Winners

15+ Votes Category: Damo

Everyone Category: Agnar

GM MERCHANT: - For January in light of things (see RL below) and the wrap up of the holiday season I'm leaving the existing items out for a while longer for sale and will release the next month's item perhaps a bit early. NOTE: Since everything will not fit on one merchant the hats on on the normal GM merchant the Yule decorations are on a separate merchant by the Farming Merchant and Temp Trader where the 2nd temp trader used to be.

COMMUNITY ASSISTANTS: Applications for additional community assistants are still open. The form can be found here: https://goo.gl/forms/aO88EqM80cYVwW9C3
This is a volunteer position and can be done while on your regular toon, doing your own things. No special character is required for this position. The short description of the position is a person who assists the community by monitoring the CA HELP and Freedom chat channels. They provide answers to questions to the best of their ability about the game mechanics and the community. Provide links to relevant wiki pages, or forum posts as relevant. Assist the Game Masters with basic player support tasks as able/willing, and responds to or adds notes to support tickets within their scope. Update: We are currently looking for 2-4 additional individuals from any region.

RL/OTHER: Monthly financial report - We received $87.51 in donations of our $155 monthly goal for the month of December.

Activity:
So I need to share a few things about why I've not been in world as much lately. It's extremely awkward, embarrassing, and a few other adjectives for me so it's kinda why I've not said much. I don't want people to think I don't care, am burnt out, or have become disinterested in the community because that couldn't be farther from the truth. The reality is yes I had been a bit busy with school work. As most of you know I returned to college this past year to earn another degree including my master's. I'm on an accelerated program which means I am doing about double the course work a traditional college student would take on. But that was just a short spell a couple months back I was wrapping up a couple heavy hitter courses. The real problem has been the last 2 months we haven't had heat in our house. Our furnace bit the dust in November and after having two different firms evaluate it, it is just too old to find the needed parts. Because I'm doing college full time I am not working persay (I still have my business which is doing just fine but I'm not in a position to draw a salary from it). What this means for us is I'm relying on savings and my student grants and loans to support the family right now. Replacing the furnace just isn't in the budget so we got some electric heaters to help in the critical parts of the house. As such though we spend a lot of time huddling in the family room on days when its below 20 degrees (F) I can't work in my office because its simply too cold which means no computer time. There are days we sleep downstairs too because when it gets down to single digits has it has a lot the past few weeks the heaters in the bedrooms can't keep up. We are having a much colder winter so far than we have had in a few years. I'm not sharing this for sympathy, or woo is me I know a lot of you have plenty of your own RL 'fun' but to know I haven't abandoned you all and this isn't the end. Clearly I need to move forward on some staffing changes to help with some of the day to day operations during this trying time for the family. This isn't a topic lost on me and will be working to get some things taken care of so the community doesn't suffer. Because of my available computer time this has made the process slower than I wanted but I will as fast as I can.

FUN FACT: There are currently 296 rice fields on Paladins! Yummy! The current most planted crop is Potatoes with 1454 fields present and the least being reed at 95 fields.

As always if you need support always feel free to open a support ticket in world so that your GM team can track your request and respond in a timely manner.

Placeholder, report will be coming out later today. Maintenance went smoothly this morning.

Oh blast I forgot to update this.  :'(

I'll combine everything into the Jan. 15th update.

WU - Wurm Unlimited / TeamSpeak migration
« on: December 31, 2017, 06:30:11 PM »
The TeamSpeak server is temporarily down. Attempted to move it to a new physical server and it failed. Working to resolve the issue, due to it being New Year's Eve and family things happening it may take me a day to circle back to address the issue if its not resolved in the next hour.

Service is restored. Since its moved boxes it may take a few hours for your DNS to update on your service provider's side.

ts2.beyondweb.com is the address you should always use but during the next 8 hours if you need to get on and can't you can connect directly to the IP 172.106.2.254

Greetings Midnight Wurmians,

This is your weekly maintenance and updates report [server patch notes] for the week of Monday, December 25th, 2017. (For maintenance done Dec. 26th, 2017)

NEW FEATURES, MODS, FUNCTIONALITY, ETC.:

New Mods & Updates:

Dye Overhaul: We want color in the world and for everyone's items to not be the same as everyone else so there is more individuality and uniqueness. Additional items is part of that but painting objects via dye is a huge part of that. Making woad easier to obtain was the first step by allowing it to be grown in pots. Long term I plan to introduce cacti into the game that will be desert biomes like lingonberry bushes are to tundra. The cacti will be harvestable and will provide a chance for several items. Cactus flesh and cactus fruit for eating/cooking/recipes, source of water like fog spiders, and most importantly cochineals which IRL cacti are the the real source of the insect that create this substance. In the mean time I will be experimenting with increasing their drop rate on cave bugs, and also giving another critter a chance to drop them (maybe spiders) temporarily. They will still be dropped on scorpions for now as well, after the overhaul is complete this might go away though since scorps are not a legit source. I'm sure the devs did that for availability purposes.

So today I can proudly say the next phase is complete. The color system in Wurm is based on RGB with the right number of mixes and patience you can create almost any color; I feel color is the spice of life and because of how hard it is to mix colors just right and get the right qualities, etc. etc. etc. we need more options. So today we are introducing all the RGB secondary colors to the game as well: Yellow, Magenta, and Cyan.

So how do you craft these new colors:

YELLOW: IRL one historical source of yellow dye is a combination of lead and tin oxides. Since we don't have to worry about the hazards of lead in wurm this will be a great way to deal with another passion of mine; giving some of the lesser used materials in the game more life. Combine a lead and tin lump to create the new "lead/tin oxide" which you then mix with water to create the yellow dye.

MAGENTA:
Combine Oleander flowers with water to create magenta dye.

CYAN: Cyan was a bit more difficult to deal with as there is really no material in wurm currently that would be a perfect match for the creation of this color. As such this recipe may likely be subject to change down the road. For now you can combine either Bouquets of blue OR purple flowers with water to create cyan dye. If you have a suggestion please feel free to let me know. If we get some good stuff we will revisit this or potentially create something all together new.

Depending on how well this is received and utilized I might even take it a step further and introduce the tertiary colors so you have a lot of control in creating just the right blend for your personal tastes and style. But regardless as is stands you sometimes need to mix dye 3 times or more to get certain colors and that I think is a bit overboard.

Tweaks and Adjustments:

Changes to Cog/Caravel: Reminder with last week's update I released the new code for the Cog and Caravels in regards to their loading range. Objects no longer need to be quite so physically close to the ship to load them since the railings on the Cog in particular is very high and its hard to click items. This should help tremendously with loading frustrations. The cog still isn't able to load a wagon yet as I'd like but I intend to make that possible here soon since its the only large vessel that can't load one which seems silly to me since a Knarr can for example.

Last week of the month! New winners will be announced next week.

GM MERCHANT: - For December we are featuring not 1 but 3 specials. First, are "soft caps" aka the red santa hats. https://www.wurmpedia.com/index.php/Soft_cap They are for sale for meager price of 1s a piece. Next, we have the Yule Reindeer and the Yule Goats which are both for sale for 2s a piece. https://www.wurmpedia.com/index.php/Yule_reindeer / https://www.wurmpedia.com/index.php/Yule_goat
As always the monthly special has a buy limit of 2 per player please. For the month of December there are NO buy limits. Buy as much as you want and if something runs out open a ticket, PM me over steam or here on the forums or all the above so I do a restock. All other items still remaining on the merchant from previous specials have no buy limits.

RL/OTHER: I am very grateful to all who donated or made a purchase last month. Serena and I ensure the "lights" stay on here but the next few months are very tight so I can't even say how sincerely appreciative we truly are. You all know I find asking for money distasteful but even $5 or $10 can make the difference in getting us to our goal. We've received about $65 of our $155 goal so far this month.

Holiday/Anniversary Celebration:

For those that participated we had a lot of fun playing battleship last week and prizes were enjoyed by all. This past Saturday we held a war hour and was some fun randomness to all who participated. We will also hold an event on December 31st during the normal Sunday event times (see a war hour) for those of you not out partying for New Year's Eve. This event will have some organization and some randomness and will serve as the start to our Anniversary celebration. We will also have some unscheduled impromptu events happening at various times between now and the end of January to celebrate our 1 year anniversary.

FUN FACT: There are currently 666 doors on the Paladins server. Interesting isn't it. LOL

As always if you need support always feel free to open a support ticket in world so that your GM team can track your request and respond in a timely manner.

NEW FEATURES, MODS, FUNCTIONALITY, ETC.:

New Mods & Updates:

I'm head deep in the color system code and well on my way to making this a reality. For example IRL a historical source of yellow dye is a combination of lead and tin oxides. 12/18 Update - Work has resume on this project and so far so good. I hope to have an alpha version moved to the test server by week's end.

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING ITEMS, RAMBLINGS, ETC.:
Server Travel: So a bunch of you discovered you can travel between Paladins and the login server. Technically this shouldn't have been possible as no "edges" were configured on paladins to link to another neighbor for the purposes of travel. The login server does have Paladins configured as its North neighbor so that travel should exist but the rest technically not. Eventually as we have more servers and this is how things would work but since the login server is really just going to be the tutorial area I wasn't planning to have folks be able to travel to it. As I mentioned yesterday afternoon to everyone that happened to be online at the time, I have plenty of irons that need attention so I'm not looking into this right now. So enjoy the "shortcuts" in the meanwhile. Do keep in mind building is not permitted on the login server, so any 'construction' will be removed.

With half the month now gone we have only received $25, and I of course realize this can be a bad time for many folks with so many demands of your time and money during this season.

Holiday/Anniversary Celebration:

For those that participated we had a lot of fun playing battleship last night and prizes were enjoyed by all. This was to make up for me missing war hour last week since I had the dates goofed up in my head, I do apologize. Our next schedule event his this Saturday which will be a war hour, it will be at the times indicated in the events thread not the normal war hour time. We will also hold an event on December 31st during the normal Sunday event times (see a war hour). This event will have some organization and some randomness and will serve as the start to our Anniversary celebration. We will also have some unscheduled impromptu events happening at various times between now and the end of January to celebrate our 1 year anniversary.

FUN FACT: There are currently 150 Octopuses, and 166 sharks on Paladins.

As always if you need support always feel free to open a support ticket in world so that your GM team can track your request and respond in a timely manner.

WU - Wurm Unlimited / Re: Stuck - Waiting for steam authentication
« on: December 18, 2017, 10:37:53 AM »
The login server lost connection with Steam's API. So the servers were technically running just without the API they couldn't validate a login. :(

Absolutely no errors or anything to indicate what the issue is in the server logs since the servers themselves were technically fine. I'm going to do some asking around and see if anyone else has run into this.

Yes, and your group trip seem to have taken place right about the time I went to bed. As I mentioned in today's notes I'm not sure what caused the login server to freeze up, paladins was fine but with no way to login no love.

Then, as luck would have it... After maintenance today steam would not talk any of the servers a while never seen this issue before so not sure if it was something steam related or not. I've seen this happen with a couple other game before when the steam HLTV platform doesn't respond fast enough so might be can't find any other reason so I'm running with that for now.

Anyhow all is well again.

Greetings Midnight Wurmians,

This is your weekly maintenance and updates report [server patch notes] for the week of Monday, December 11th, 2017.

Sorry about last night, seems the login server crashed just as I was crawling into bed around 10PM EST. As the process didn't actually shut down my alert program didn't trigger. Not sure what I can do to resolve that but I will be looking into it for sure.

NEW FEATURES, MODS, FUNCTIONALITY, ETC.:

New Mods & Updates:

No new mods this week.

UPDATES

Updated AGO's Mod Launcher Framework to the latest server version (0.32.1). Minor patch fix for the last update.

Tweaks and Adjustments:

Spell Changes: The proposed spell changes to our two custom gods Stjerna and Stjarna is finally complete. Please reference the following spreadsheet if you have not been following the process.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sKAZrEWjPEAbA87wnvXimBQGb8CTrbC1bvLjH9bk7aY/edit?usp=sharing

Additionally the requirements for the "Rites" have been modified to make it a bit easier for our population to realistically be able to cast them. This is subject to change, as we all experiment with being able to accomplish them. If they need further adjusting I will adjust. All rites now required 4K banked favor with the respective god and will consume 2K favor. For those that are not familiar with the rites this favor pool is the pool of the god not the individual. Every time someone prays to their god (doesn't matter if you personally earn faith or not) 1 favor point goes into that god's favor pool.

Several of the gods already have the required favor, so let's see what happens. These require some coordination to do the casting so priests have at it and get to linking. :D

Some additional changes:
- When Holy Crop Rite is cast a new added bonus is a server wide "Genesis" will be cast along with it. Animals will have a 1 in 10 chance of having a bad trait removed from them.
- Overriding the game's default way of determining the required amount of players to be present to perform rites. Rite of Spring in particular with is normally (number of active player accounts / 15). As this factors in alts it can throw the number to an unrealistic level for server pop levels WU sees. Right now this is capped at 10 and again subject to change as we determine what's realistic for our community.
- Since some of Libila's followers have some abilities gimped since she was never meant to work on a PvE server. She has required a lot of modifications to make work, I felt the following was a fair compensation for not all of her abilities being available on Paladins. Scorn of Libila will now apply the max of 2 wounds healed, even if damage is not dealt. This should be particularly helpful during boss fights to help group survivability.
- When you examine critters now they will show the names of any active buffs in a manner similar to examining an item and how it reports enchants. This applies to spells like Excel, Truehit, Oakshell, etc.

Let me know what you think of the changes in a reply to this thread and we will tweak as we go.

12/11 - Hoping to have this complete by 12/18.

Current Coding Project: Not a lot to report, but coding of the cog/caravel modification for the loading range (and the ability to load a wagon on a Cog) is complete. Was moved to the test server, all looks good will release next week. 12/11 - Caught one minor bug fixing, and testing again should be released on 12/18.

Dye Overhaul: One of the code projects I'm working on is a major overhaul to the dye system. Making woad easier to obtain was a part of that. They will still be dropped on scorpions for now as well, after the overhaul is complete this might go away though since scorps not not a legit source. I'm sure the devs did that for availability purposes.

But what there's more! If you order right now.... err wrong show sorry.  8)
I'm taking it a step further and while technically since the color system in Wurm is based on RGB with the right number of mixes and patience you can create almost any color; I feel color is the spice of life and because of how hard it is to mix colors just right and get the right qualities, etc. etc. etc. we need more options. So I will be introducing all the RGB secondary colors to the game as well: Yellow, Magenta, and Cyan.

I'm head deep in the color system code and well on my way to making this a reality. I've already worked up the crafting recipes and come up with logical materials to create them from items already in game. For example IRL a historical source of yellow dye is a combination of lead and tin oxides. Since we don't have to worry about the hazards of lead in wurm this will be a great way to deal with another passion of mine; giving some of the lesser used materials in the game more life. Depending on how well this project goes I might even take it a step further and introduce the tertiary colors so you have a lot of control in creating just the right blend for your personal tastes and style. But regardless as is stands you sometimes need to mix dye 3 times or more to get certain colors and that I think is a bit overboard.

12/11 Update - I plan to resume work on this project this week. The priorities will be finishing the cog/caravel tweaks and moving the white light so may be next week depending.

This month marks our 1 year server anniversary (24th). I have just a few more details to work out and should have an announcement ready for you by next week. Some of the celebration will last over the holidays and into the new year for a full month of stuff and fun.

FUN FACT: There are currently 208 branded critters on Paladins, and 50 prego critters.

As always if you need support always feel free to open a support ticket in world so that your GM team can track your request and respond in a timely manner.

Greetings Midnight Wurmians,

This is your weekly maintenance and updates report [server patch notes] for the week of Monday, December 4th, 2017.

NEW FEATURES, MODS, FUNCTIONALITY, ETC.:

New Mods & Updates:

No new mods this week.

Update from the server upgrades:
So in case you missed my other post in the update thread. The server upgrades went amazing. I had planned a 6 hour maintenance window it took 7 hours but meh it was all worth it. So the summary of things is the physical hardware our server runs on is much beefier now and has also been re-configured. The server has new higher end high I/O rate hard drives to deal with the continuous database updates better. We have more processing power (not really a big deal wurm didn't even use 10% of the processing power of our old box), and we have double the RAM (this is significant as wurm uses little processing power but is a memory PIG). Additionally we have a dedicated login server and have setup our environment into a true cluster configuration just like Wurm Online uses. I wasn't planning to do until next month but since the box upgrade happened sooner that was the time to do all these changes.

Existing characters will notice no difference, but new characters will now spawn onto a different map running on the login server. Right now this spawn town will have a few buildings just to set the "atmosphere" but its main point is to herd folks towards the docks. At the docks are ships/portals that take the player to their designation. Of course right now that is only our main "Paladins" server, however everything is in place for additional worlds now. As time permits (if anyone wants to help I welcome thoughts) I plan to build the area out into a full blown mission based game tutorial similar in concept to what WO does on the Golden Valley tutorial map.

I've debated the whole PvP aspect for a LONG time, and have been getting a lot of folks inside and outside of our community asking we do this. This will not happen quickly but we are most likely going to go this direction and spin up a PvP server. Lots will need to go into its planning but the framework is in place to ease the roll out of it or any other server in the future.

UPDATES

Updated AGO's Mod Launcher Framework to the latest server version (0.32). Update affects a few sub-mods configuration files so updated to bring in line with new methods.

Tweaks and Adjustments:

Nothing of note this week here.

IN THE PIPELINE:
Currently we have a number of projects in the pipeline but here's some details on what is close to breaking the surface and becoming a reality within the next 30 days.

Spell Changes: We finally have the ability to control the religion system, and spells in an intelligent way. What this means is we will soon be making the changes to the twin gods we have always planned to execute since their inception. The deities spreadsheet linked on our main page has always outlined the proposed changes, so folks were always aware of what would be coming down the road. Since enough time has passed the changes in the spreadsheet are not considered final and will be re-evaluated. Once the final changes are drafted I will post the notice here in the weekly update and start a forum post thread specifically on the subject so you can provide feedback. Lastly, in the end if you are unsatisfied with the changes to the twins those that are followers of the twins will be granted a free god change without loss of faith. 12/4 Update - Should be done by 12/18.

12/4 - I hope to make this happen next week. Previously got shelved due to needing to spend time on spawn town on new login server.

Current Coding Project: 12/4 - Not a lot to report, but coding of the cog/caravel modification for the loading range (and the ability to load a wagon on a Cog) is complete. Was moved to the test server, all looks good will release next week.

Dye Overhaul: One of the code projects I'm working on is a major overhaul to the dye system. Making woad easier to obtain was a part of that. Long term I plan to introduce cacti into the game that will be desert biomes like lingonberry bushes are to tundra. The cacti will be harvestable and will provide a chance for several items. RL/OTHER: RL is finally calming down, and I have my final exam for my current course work tomorrow. With those stresses over I can move forward and focus more on getting server to-do lists resolved. Financial report for the month of November. We received in donations and shop purchases $121 of the $180 needed for the monthly server bill. Fortunately for December and forward our monthly operating costs will drop to $155 a savings of $25/mo. I am very grateful to all who donated or made a purchase. This month marks our 1 year server anniversary. Hopefully by next week I'll have some more details ready about what will be happening later this month for our celebration.

FUN FACT: There are over 21,000 critters on the Paladins server and continuing to rise. 122 of which are deer, and 725 are hell hounds.

Login server built and configured. Cluster is in place and transfers seem to be working just lovely.

Just needing to get a portal working on the login server in the spawn area so that newly created characters can get to the main map. Then some testing to make sure the server data is syncing properly and I should be done.

Should be less than an hour now.

New hardware is online, secured/tweaked, configured, and all data transferred onto the box from the old one.

Working on building the wurm cluster and setting up the dedicated login server now.

Still another hour or two of work.

We are currently undergoing an extended maintenance window for physical server hardware upgrades and cluster modification. As the server upgrade progresses today I will be posting more information in this thread. Please check back for additional details and instructions.

We are now in a multi-server cluster environment. What this means is we now run a setup just like WO does with a dedicated login server (think WO tutorial area) separate from our main game server known as Paladins. You will login to the server named "Midnight Wurm [Cluster Login] mwmgamers.org" now. Existing characters will automatically be transferred to the Paladins server and you will notice nothing. New characters will arrive in the new spawn point on the login server map.

Right now this is nothing more than a couple signs and a portal to the main server. Eventually this will be a developed good looking site, and our long term plans are to build a full tutorial path for folks to go thru. It will of course be optional and you can skip ahead to port out to the main map right away. I'll go into more detail about why this was done in the next weekly update on Monday.

EDIT: See below. We are now back online!  8)
If you are experiencing any issues after the server upgrade/cluster build today please post them here so we can jump on it as quickly as possible.

EXTENDED MAINTENANCE NOTICE:

I will be conducting a physical hardware replacement of our server on Thursday, November 30th at our normal weekly maintenance times. 10AM US-EST (UTC-4), 7AM US-PST, 3PM UK, Tues 1AM AU-AET

Estimated downtime I'm hoping will be around 2 hours but there is a lot of work involved and that might be very optimistic so I'm going to say 2-6 hours for the window.

On the plus side we will have much sexier hardware and our costs are going down by $25 a month!
