Travel Lag! :(
« on: September 01, 2017, 11:14:32 PM »
Ok, some may have heard my high pitched whine over the endless miles when I would lose a prayer due to disconnecting.

This is what I have confirmed now.

I would hop my horsey and go a bit aways to the nearest altar, hop of my horse and immediately start praying. To may utter dismay, the action bar at the bottom under the event/skills window would stick at finishing... I knew this meant a disconnect so I would press escape and the game would do a relog. The bad thing is I would lose 1 of the 5 daily prayers.

This happened about 4 times overall and these last couple of times I would hop of my horse and type some text in the Freedom channel, this would cause the game to do a relog immediately. Once I was back in the game, I would send the text again and once I seen that it showed up in chat, I would do my praying.

I did this routine the last 3 times and it was the same everytime. It seems that when you travel somewhat long distances, the game kinda loses track of you or has some kind of networking glitch.

This may be known, but since I encountered it, I thought I would spread the word!

Thanks and word!

There has indeed been exceptional lag recently, it doesn't seem to matter what one does. An activity stops and then either the activity continues of itself after some time or the client reboots.

Thanks for the input!

Actually this is the only time I experience any lag and its reproducable, in fact every time, so it seems this may be something more than just a standard lag spike, but who knows?

Thanks for the report Big I'm not what could be happening there but will do some poking around to see if I have some ideas.

Are you experiencing a lot of lag then Erika? The server itself doesn't experience much lag, you may get a spike a couple times over the course of the whole day when a couple of the server processes decide to run at the same time. Process timer scheduling is little buggy in the game code.

What is your usual ping to the server?

I have had lag spikes for some days now, more than a couple a  day. The typical ping as shown in the server list is quite constant and hovers at 200.

Interesting. well for wurm that ping rate isn't bad at all. usually folks don't report much client lag until past the 300s. I'll see if I can come up with something. As I say the server itself experiences little lag and usually for only a minute or two when the tile poller runs and even then its not every time it runs.

When you are experiencing one of the spikes try this. Click your Start button and type cmd in the search box and press enter. In the window that pops up type "ping -t gs1.mwmgamers.org" (minus the quotes) and press enter. Let it go for at least 10 lines then press Ctrl+C to stop it. If you could take a screen shot or report at least the ping entries for those lines.

Overall my speed and server lag seem pretty good. I don't every really have any issues. The only consistent issue I found is when traveling to an altar, hoping off my horse and immediately praying. It would quick log me every time and I would lose a prayer for the day.

Since I caught on, instead of immediately praying I would type something into freedom chat and that would trigger the quick log. I would then pray and all seemed good.

It really seemed like traveling caused this and I may not have waited long enough for the server to recalc coordinates or update my position before praying, but not sure.

I am sure I could reproduce the situation since it really only happened after traveling to an altar and trying to text freedom or pray.

The lag spikes don't seem to happen every day but today yes. The client rebooted itself a couple of times too .

summary of running ping:
--- gs1.beyondweb.com ping statistics ---
1208 packets transmitted, 1063 received, +3 duplicates, 12% packet loss, time 1208913ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 154.155/156.705/215.490/4.419 ms

the ping was rather level, the lag spikes/reboots gave only short and mild disturbations like:

ah ok linux no problem I understand.

The ping looks pretty stable and isn't that bad. The packet loss however is troubling and would at that percentage indeed cause lag. There are some nice tools on dslreports.com that might help provide some insight into the problem.
